2. Please donate or volunteer for KINDH!
It’s that special time of year again when Wayside supports families in need during the holidays. Wayside has been a generous partner with KINDH, a nonprofit organization that serves low-income families during the holiday season in Montgomery County.

This year we have two lists of needs so that each family we serve can be taken care of to the fullest degree!

Please look for your child’s grade level and provide to families in need.  All items should be NEW and unwrapped.  Please label all items with the family number so we can organize everything accordingly.  All items must be at Wayside by Monday, December 18th.

5. Wayside PTA Update
This week the PTA hosted its third general PTA meeting.  We voted on amending the budget due to our huge success thus far!  For some quick insight, click here!

Congratulations to the 4th grade who had the most representation at both our PTA meeting and Mrs. Freundel’s Restorative Justice information session.  4th grade will each receive a new indoor recess game for their classrooms!

Please update your calendars: The general PTA meeting in February has been cancelled to allow the board to begin preparations for the 24-25 school year.  Our final general PTA meeting will be in early May where we will vote on the new board and close out the year!  If you want to get involved in the PTA the second half of the school year please email Amy at volunteers@waysidepta.org to learn how!

6. Wayside is looking for Girls on the Run coaches to host a spring team for girls in grades 3-5.
Girls on the Run, a national non-profit organization, designs programming that strengthens third- to eighth grade girls’ social, emotional, physical and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences.”  Coaches mentor and instruct girls on confidence, inclusion and healthy habits for life while training for a 5k run.

Practices are twice a week from March through May, culminating in a 5k run with the Montgomery County communities.

Wayside requires dedicated parent coaches for the program to operate successfully. We are still looking for a couple coaches in order to have a Girls on the Run program at Wayside this spring.

NEW Coach Training:

Before leading a team, new coaches are required to complete both online and in-person training. To initiate the process, volunteers must register with Pinwheel and complete a 4 to 5-hour online course. Additionally, Girls on the Run has recently introduced an app that enables trainees to access the course from their smartphone, in addition to their desktop computer. Once the online course is completed, volunteers must attend a 1.5-hour in-person lesson demonstration (exact dates and times will be announced soon). After successfully completing both the online and in-person training, volunteers will be certified as a Girls on the Run coach.

Please reach out to Kristin Silbowitz at activities@waysidepta.org if you are interested.

7. Last Day for Free Shipping on Wayside Spirit Wear is Today!

8. Ada Ari Visit
This week, PTA sponsored an assembly with Ada Ari, Nigerian folktale author.  Ada provided an engaging, electric and kinesthetic story-telling experience!  Ada had our students (and staff) dancing the Azonto, learning about Africa’s geography (particularly Ghana) and listening to the African folktale, The Spider’s Thin Legs.  Students also had the opportunity to play African instruments, carry the Golden Stool, wear a Kente cloth and carry baskets on their heads mimicking how Africans get from one place to the next carrying goods and items.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed her visit!

Our next PTA sponsored assembly is a Chinese Lion Dance welcoming the Lunar New Year at the end of January.

9. Get Ready for a Wayside Spirit Week!

10. Wayside’s Skate Night is on January 13th!

RSVP for Skate Night by 1/8/24–please include the number of skaters and skate rentals you will need. The PTA will cover the admission fee for each skater.  Skate rentals are $4, payable at the rink. Spectators are free.
