1. Congratulations to Kindergarten for winning the school wide spirit wear competition!
The kindergarteners had the highest percentage of students showing off their Wayside school spirit on Friday, October 13th.

Mrs. Egan, Mrs. Young and Mrs. Saunders will each receive $50 in Scholastic Bucks to our Scholastic Book Fair which starts November 3rd!  We can’t wait to see the new books in your classrooms.

If you’d like to support your grade for our next competition, please visit https://www.waysidespiritwear.com/ or https://www.bonfire.com/store/2023-2024-special-edition-logo-wear/ today!

2. PTA Membership
On Friday, October 6th, fourth graders enjoyed popsicles as they won the PTA membership competition!  It was a “cool” way to end the week!

We are sitting at 184 PTA members!  If you haven’t joined but have participated in our events, the time to join is now!
If you want to join and need financial assistance, please reach out to Christina Freundel at Christina_B_Freundel@mcpsmd.org for more information.

3. Volunteers Needed for Book Fair

Please help us make this year’s Scholastic Book Fair a success and sign up to volunteer today! Volunteers are needed between 9:30am and 3pm to help students find books and to check students out.Teachers will bring their classes to the book fair at specific times on Friday, November 3rd and Monday, November 6th. Time slots on the 3rd and 6th will eventually be updated to indicate which classes will be shopping during those time slots.

The book fair will be open for all students to shop on Tuesday, November 7th, Wednesday, November 8th and the morning of Thursday, November 9th. You can set up your child’s eWallet now for a safe cash-free way to shop!

The book fair will be open for all families to shop during Teacher Reading Night on Wednesday, November 8th, 5-7pm.

Thank you so much for your support!

4. It Takes a Village
Thanks to Helena Lopez for planning a Spirit WEEKEND at Playa Bowls!  It was a healthy treat to add to our long weekend.  Mrs. Rhoads’ son Everett enjoyed it and Catalano, Ms. Deutsch’s cat, thought it looked delish!
Join us for our next spirit night on November 15th at Potomac Pizza!

Thank you to Kristen Lavender for planning a spectacular Friday Night Lights Bingo!
Thank you to Elinor Quinones, Jennifer Simms, Michelle Fenton, Kirstin Silbowitz and Melissa Adler for supporting the execution and breakdown of this wonderful event!
Thank you to all of our Wayside staff for staying late on a Friday night and calling out our numbers: Mrs. Egan, Ms. Deutsch, Ms. Bortnick, Ms. Way, Ms. Mirzayeva and Mr. Appel.
Congrats to our fourth grade raffle winner for sporting her Wayside spirit wear!

5. Please be on the lookout for letters from your room parents regarding class parties!
Room parents are asking for a one-time, $30 contribution per child to be used toward all three of the class parties this year (including Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and the end of year party).  Hopefully this one-time payment will be easier than asking for multiple payments as in prior years.  The parties will be coordinated by the room parents. Your contribution will be used to provide snacks, crafts, games, and prizes for all students.  It is our hope that all students participating in the parties will contribute.  Logistics around the Halloween festivities will come soon.

How much screen time is too much for an elementary school student? When should a student get their own phone? How can we re-balance our child’s use of electronics? What lessons are being taught in school about electronics and online safety? And how can we break our own addiction to our devices?

Join us for a presentation/Q&A with Victoria Saylor from Common Sense Education on Tuesday, October 24 at 6pm. Victoria is a nationally known expert on these topics and she works closely with the MCPS Director of Media Centers on lessons delivered to students via Media Centers. She can help us navigate these challenging issues around screen time within our schools and families.

Register now:  https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAod-igqjMuHd0CO6kmT_XFKYkQiPJqbhV0
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. This presentation is mainly geared toward elementary school families but is open to all interested parties.
